Heat stress on farmers could be as damaging to food security as crop loss
In short: Researchers using a global economic model and a meta-analysis of crop yields found that climate change impacts both the crops and the people who grow them. The study revealed that at 3°C of global warming, the reduction in agricultural labor capacity is just as significant as the decline in staple grain yields worldwide.
By integrating heat stress metrics with labor functions, the researchers highlighted how rising temperatures reduce the human ability to work. This interaction is particularly severe in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, where labor capacity could drop by 30% to 50%. However, the study relies on economic modeling and may not capture all localized adaptation strategies.
Why it matters: Climate change threatens food security not just by killing crops, but by making it physically harder for humans to farm.
