Land use and economic activity shape ecological quality in the Dongting Lake Basin
In short: Researchers analyzing satellite data from 2001 to 2019 found that the ecological quality of the Dongting Lake Basin fluctuated over nearly two decades. By using the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI), the study identified that while the region's ecological health shifted, the changes were relatively small in intensity, primarily moving between fair, moderate, and good levels.
The study highlights how human and environmental factors interact to influence large-scale ecosystems. The researchers identified land use, average annual rainfall, and GDP as the primary drivers of these changes. Specifically, woody savannas, mixed forests, and certain vegetation mosaics were found to be the most significant contributors to the area's ecological quality.
The analysis was conducted using remote sensing data to track spatial and temporal variations. However, the study primarily identifies associations between these factors and ecological quality rather than establishing direct causal links.
Why it matters: Understanding how land use and economic growth interact is essential for creating targeted restoration plans for large lake basins.
