Global cropland expansion has accelerated over the last two decades
In short: Researchers analyzing satellite data found that global cropland area grew by 9% between 2003 and 2019. This expansion has sped up recently, with the annual rate nearly doubling, driven largely by agricultural growth in Africa and South America.
This study used satellite time-series data to track global cropland changes. The researchers found that nearly half of the newly created cropland replaced existing natural vegetation or tree cover.
While per-capita cropland area fell by 10% due to population growth, the productivity per person increased by 3.5% because of more intensive farming.
Why it matters: The accelerating conversion of natural vegetation into cropland poses challenges for terrestrial ecosystem protection.
