In short: Researchers have developed an iterative procedure that uses seismic waveform data to solve two classical seismological problems at once. By analyzing long-period body wave data, the method can simultaneously establish an earthquake's hypocentral coordinates and its source mechanism, allowing for the detailed study of both major events and smaller aftershock sequences.

This approach streamlines analysis by finding perturbations in the moment tensor and hypocentral parameters at the same time. When applied to the Sumba earthquake sequence, the method revealed temporal variations in the stress regime. However, the current approach is limited to earthquakes within a specific magnitude range, roughly between 5.5 and 8.0.

Why it matters: Seismologists can now more efficiently study the stress changes in both large earthquakes and their aftershocks.
