New computational tables improve the accuracy of global earthquake location
In short: Researchers have developed the iasp91 traveltime tables, a new computational tool designed to help seismologists more accurately locate earthquakes. By using a radially stratified velocity model based on seismic data from 1964 to 1987, these tables provide highly accurate traveltime estimates for major seismic phases across various depths and ranges.
The study introduces a method for generating traveltime tables that are consistent across different seismic phases. While the tables allow for rapid, high-accuracy interpolation for arbitrary depths, the model's accuracy depends on the underlying velocity model and the quality of the historical catalogue used for construction.
Why it matters: These new tables provide a more precise way for scientists to map the movement of seismic waves through the Earth.
