In short: Tracing their origins to the 1st-century mission of Thomas the Apostle, the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala have navigated centuries of colonial pressure, liturgical shifts, and internal schisms. This ethno-religious community, historically linked to the Church of the East, remains a unique bridge between Indian culture and ancient Syriac Christianity.

The Saint Thomas Christians, or Nasrani, represent one of the oldest Christian communities in India. Their history is deeply intertwined with the Church of the East, which provided ecclesiastical leadership from Persia starting in the 3rd century. By the 8th century, Patriarch Timothy I formalized this connection, establishing the Province of India. This structure allowed the community to maintain a distinct identity, characterized by the use of Syriac in their liturgy and the authority of a local dynastic archdeacon who wielded significant secular and religious power.

The community's trajectory shifted dramatically following the arrival of Portuguese explorers in 1498. Seeking to impose the Roman Rite and bring the Nasrani under the Padroado system, Portuguese authorities eventually convened the Synod of Diamper in 1599. This event forced the community into the Catholic Church, purged their traditional Syriac texts, and attempted to dismantle local customs. Resentment toward these colonial impositions culminated in the 1653 Coonan Cross Oath, where the community formally rejected Portuguese authority and asserted their independence, leading to a permanent schism that persists today.

Internal divisions also define the community, most notably the distinction between the 'Northists' and 'Southists'. The Northists claim direct descent from the early converts of Thomas the Apostle, while the Southists trace their lineage to the 4th or 8th-century migration of Knai Thoma, a merchant who arrived with a cohort of clergy and settlers. Today, these groups are further divided into various Eastern Catholic, Oriental Orthodox, and Protestant bodies, each maintaining unique traditions while sharing a common heritage that has survived nearly two millennia of geopolitical and religious transformation.
