How an ancient Indian church blends apostolic roots with modern democratic governance
In short: The Mar Thoma Syrian Church traces its origins to the first-century mission of Saint Thomas the Apostle in India. While maintaining deep ties to its ancient Syriac liturgical heritage, this autonomous community has evolved into a distinctively democratic, Protestant-aligned institution that now spans the globe through the modern Indian diaspora.
The Mar Thoma Syrian Church, or Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, identifies as a continuation of the Saint Thomas Christians. Tradition holds that Thomas the Apostle arrived on the Malabar Coast in AD 52, landing at Muziris. This community existed for centuries as a monolithic body, often served by foreign bishops and led by a local hereditary chief known as the Archdeacon. The church's history was fundamentally altered by the 16th-century arrival of Portuguese Jesuits, whose attempts to annex the community into the Latin Catholic Church sparked the 1653 Coonan Cross Oath, where members vowed to resist foreign ecclesiastical control.
The church underwent a significant reformation in the 19th century, leading to its current identity as an autonomous, Protestant-theology institution. It utilizes a reformed version of the West Syriac Rite Divine Liturgy, translated into the Malayalam language. Administratively, the church is highly structured and democratic. It is governed by a constitution that includes an Episcopal Synod, a House of Representatives known as the Prathinithi Mandalam, and a Sabha Council. The head of the church, the Mar Thoma Metropolitan, is typically the senior-most bishop among the consecrated Episcopas.
Membership has expanded far beyond its historical base in Central Travancore and Kunnamkulam. With over 1 million members today, the church has established a presence across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia and Africa. The selection of its clergy is a rigorous process involving theological training, psychological evaluations, and a unique missionary service program. This blend of ancient, indigenous roots and a modern, representative administrative framework allows the church to maintain its historical identity while operating as a global, evangelical body in the 21st century.
