The solitary survival of elephant seal pups
In short: Watch how elephant seal pups navigate the high-stakes transition to independence. This footage uses discreet on-board cameras to reveal the private behaviors of these creatures as they learn to survive alone.
Elephant seal pups are left by their mothers at just one month old, a pivotal moment where they must quickly master self-sufficiency. By using lightweight, discreet camera technology, wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan and his team capture ground-breaking behaviors that were previously hidden from human view.
The project aims to deepen our understanding of various species—from sharks and orcas to Tasmanian devils—while simultaneously promoting conservation efforts through exclusive, high-quality natural history footage.
