Why sharks don't actually mistake humans for seals

Sharks: Masters of the Ocean | Free Documentary · 49:33 · Video: Free Documentary - Nature · Watch at the source

In short: This documentary explores the misunderstood behavior of sharks through the lens of researcher Erich Ritter. It challenges common myths about shark attacks and highlights a more nuanced approach to human-shark interaction.

Researcher Erich Ritter, founder of SharkSchool in 1996, advocated for education over fear. He specifically argued against popular theories that sharks are attracted to blood or frequently mistake humans for seals. To facilitate safer engagement, he developed the ADORE-SANE framework to guide human-shark interactions.

The film documents Ritter's life and work, including a 2002 incident in the Bahamas where he was bitten by a bull shark while filming for Discovery Channel. Despite losing part of his left calf, Ritter continued his research until his death in August 2020 at age 61.
