In short: This lithium aluminum silicate mineral is the backbone of the battery revolution. Found in granite pegmatites, spodumene is a high-grade ore that requires intense heat to unlock its potential. While brine deposits are common, this hard-rock mineral is essential for the high-performance batteries driving our transition to electric vehicles.

Spodumene, a pyroxene mineral with the chemical formula LiAlSi2O6, is a vital source of lithium for industrial and technological applications. It typically occurs in lithium-bearing granite pegmatites. While the mineral can be transparent and glassy—sometimes serving as a semiprecious gemstone—its industrial value lies in its high lithium content. Unlike brine sources, spodumene offers a higher concentration of lithium, though it demands more complex and costly extraction processes to recover the metal.

The extraction of lithium from spodumene is notoriously difficult due to the tight binding of the element within the mineral's crystal structure. Naturally occurring alpha-spodumene must be roasted at temperatures exceeding 800 °C to convert it into the more reactive beta-spodumene. This structural shift allows for subsequent chemical processing, such as acid leaching or reaction with other reagents, to isolate the lithium. Traditional refining methods often produce significant caustic waste, though newer, more sustainable approaches are emerging.

The global market for lithium has shifted significantly over the last few decades. While American production dominated until the 1990s, the turn of the 21st century saw a move toward non-U.S. sources, with countries like Australia becoming leading suppliers. Today, spodumene concentrate—often referred to as SC6—is a critical raw material for producing lithium-ion batteries. As demand for electric vehicles and power storage grows, the ability to efficiently refine this hard-rock ore has become a focal point for industrial innovation, with companies developing processes to minimize waste and improve purity.
