Intelligence was never meant to be sealed inside the human skull
In short: We often view technology as a modern invention, but our history is actually one of constant expansion. From the first sharpened flint to modern silicon, humans have always thought with their tools. We are not just users of technology; we are collaborative systems that have always lived in symbiosis with the world.
The concept of the 'Extended Mind' suggests that human cognition is not confined to biological boundaries. Instead, objects like notebooks, workshop benches, family kitchens, and even a blind man's cane function as active components of how we think, see, and remember. This perspective shifts the narrative of technology from a series of external inventions to a continuous evolution of the human hand—moving from gripping stone to pressing clay, turning parchment, and eventually reaching toward silicon. This evolution is grounded in a 'metabolism of knowledge.' Every intelligent output carries a physical cost and a human labor. This includes the extraction of rare earth minerals, the operation of sleepless data centers, and the work of technicians in clean rooms.
Rather than a sci-fi spectacle of abstract cyberspace, intelligence is a heavy, humming, and alive process that requires a physical place on Earth and a human infrastructure to sustain it. Current research, such as the SYMBIOSIS project at Imperial College London, seeks to formalize this by modeling intelligence as a closed loop. By studying humans and AI as interconnected systems, researchers aim to create 'nature-efficient' AI that mimics biological systems. The goal is to move beyond machines that simply replace tasks toward 'empathic machines' that can interact with human emotions and thoughts by the 2040s, ensuring that people do not just use machines, but feel understood by them.
