The desperate mission to save Cuba’s largest bird from extinction
In short: On the island of Juventud, a dedicated team works around the clock to ensure the Cuban crane does not vanish forever. This documentary follows their tireless efforts to monitor and protect these majestic birds.
Fidel and José work for the Los Indios bird sanctuary in southwestern Cuba, where they serve as vital eyes on the ground for biologists in Havana. To track the Caribbean's biggest avian species, they scout the sanctuary for nests as their main duty.
While there are currently eleven crane colonies across the Cuban archipelago, the species remains threatened with extinction. The keepers' dedication has led to an increase in nesting sites each year, though significant work remains to secure the long-term survival of the bird.
