From one hundred to a thriving wild recovery

In short: At the turn of the century, the Iberian lynx was on the absolute brink of extinction. With fewer than 100 individuals remaining, this elusive cat became a global symbol of conservation urgency. Today, it serves as a masterclass in how targeted intervention can pull a species back from the void.

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is one of the rarest cats on Earth, endemic to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. By the early 2000s, its numbers had plummeted so drastically that it was classified as critically endangered by the IUCN.

Historically, the species enjoyed a much broader range. Until the early 19th century, they were found across Spain, Portugal, and southern France. Their territory even overlapped with their larger relative, the Eurasian lynx, along the Spanish-French border in the Pyrenees Mountains. However, since that era, the Iberian lynx has disappeared from most of its former haunts, leaving only fragmented habitats.

The recovery of the species is a testament to intensive conservation efforts. By 2002, only two breeding populations remained in Spain: Sierra de Andújar and Doñana National Park. Since then, these numbers have rebounded significantly. Spanning roughly 3,320 square km, this feline returned to multiple territories by 2022, notably Portugal's Algarve and Alentejo plus Spain's Extremadura, Andalusia, and Castilla–La Mancha.

Survival for this predator depends on a very specific ecological niche. It requires a balance of open pastures for hunting and dense scrub for shelter, specifically preferring Mediterranean scrublands and native oak forests. Crucially, its survival is tied to the availability of its primary prey: the European rabbit. By protecting these specific habitats and their food sources, conservationists have managed to turn a near-extinction event into a modern success story.
