The Clotilde: The Final Illegal Slave Ship to Reach American Shores in 1860
In short: In 1860, the Clotilde defied federal law by transporting the final group of enslaved Africans to Mobile, Alabama. This video examines the history of this voyage and the long-lost account of the survivors, brought to light by the 2018 publication of a manuscript by Zora Neale Hurston.
Although the United States had officially ended its participation in the international slave trade by 1860, the ship Clotilde arrived in Mobile, Alabama, that year carrying enslaved people from Africa. This event marked the last instance of such a voyage to the United States.
The story remained largely forgotten until 2018, when editor Deborah Plant published a previously unpublished book by the renowned author Zora Neale Hurston. Hurston’s work provides a firsthand account of the Clotilde’s history, preserving the experiences of those who survived this final, illegal journey.
