Italy's hidden underwater graveyards tell a story of environmental change

The Mystery of Italy's Disappearing Native Ecosystems · 52:03 · Video: Real Wild · Watch at the source

In short: Beyond the luxury villas and glamorous shores of Lake Como lies a volatile, ancient world. Beneath the surface of this glacial jewel, an unexpected landscape of discarded relics reveals the heavy toll of modern pollution on Italy's fragile alpine ecosystems.

Lake Como, situated at the southern edge of the snowcapped Alps, is a deep glacial lake shaped by raw natural forces and ancient ice age glaciers. While it serves as a playground for the elite, its waters host a complex battle between land and water supremacy. This includes vast wetlands like the Pian d’Spagna nature reserve and vertical cliffs that provide sanctuary for rare birds of prey.

The environmental reality is starker than the surface aesthetics suggest. Local marine biologists have identified an underwater graveyard of discarded relics deep within the lake's pitch-black waters. These artifacts serve as silent evidence of systemic environmental change and modern pollution, threatening the delicate balance between Italy's pristine wildlife and its long history of human culture.

This struggle for preservation is part of a broader national context. While Italy possesses diverse vegetation zones—from the cork oaks and olives of the Lombard lakes to the beech forests of the mountain plains—human activity has fundamentally altered many regions. In the Po valley, for instance, almost nothing remains of the original forests, as nearly all vegetation was replaced by human-driven cultivation.

Conservationists are currently racing against time to protect these alpine waters. Italy's efforts face significant hurdles; in 2023, its designated terrestrial protected areas fell below the European Union’s target value of 26.4%. With a population density of 201.3 people per km², the pressure on these remaining wild spaces remains intense.
