The secret of an 'unspoilt' landscape is centuries of human labor

The Lueneburg Heath: Manmade Wildlife Paradise | Free Documentary Nature · 44:28 · Video: Free Documentary - Nature · Watch at the source

In short: The Lüneburg Heath is often celebrated as a pristine wilderness, but its beauty is actually a product of human history. This documentary reveals how a cultivated landscape became a thriving wildlife paradise.

Spanning nearly 500 km², the Naturpark Südheide in Lower Saxony is a diverse nature reserve shaped by both ice age geology and centuries of human intervention. While it appears wild to the casual observer, the region between Hamburg and Hannover was historically a cultivated landscape defined by heathland farmers and sheep.

Filmmaker Günter Goldmann uses high-definition slow motion and aerial perspectives to capture the region's inhabitants, including badgers in subterranean burrows, quarrelling black grouse, and wild boar. The documentary explores the balance between a manmade environment and the diverse wildlife that now calls it home.
