Why this sea lion pup receives an unusually long maternal education
In short: Follow the journey of an Australian Sea Lion from a vulnerable pup to a self-sufficient adult. This documentary highlights a rare biological investment: an extended period of maternal care that serves as a survival masterclass in a dangerous ocean.
Born on Australia's rugged southwest coast, this sea lion navigates two distinct worlds. On land, he faces aggression from his own species; in the water, he must evade Great White Sharks and human threats. Unlike most seal species that provide maternal care for only 12 months, the Australian Sea Lion mother protects and feeds her pup for an extraordinary 18 months.
This extended period is not just about nourishment. The extra time allows the mother to teach the pup essential foraging techniques and navigate specific food sources. The film tracks this transition as the pup matures into a fully grown adult seeking its own breeding territory.
