The mysterious decline of the North Pacific's iconic sea lions

Lions of the Deep | Blue Realm | Free Documentary Nature · 44:42 · Video: Free Documentary - Nature · Watch at the source

In short: Since the 1970s, sea lion populations along the North Pacific coast have plummeted by more than 80%. This documentary explores the efforts to save the stellar sea lion by studying these intelligent mammals in a unique floating laboratory.

To understand why Canada's biggest pinniped, the stellar sea lion, has seen such a sharp decline, a team from the Vancouver Aquarium and the University of British Columbia is conducting a study. While wild stellar sea lions in Alaska appear to be thriving, their aggressive nature makes them difficult to study and photograph in the wild.

To overcome these hurdles, scientists utilize The Open Water Research Station. This floating laboratory allows for the observation of tame, free-swimming seals and sea lions in their natural habitat. These interactions provide critical new insights into the fragile food chain of the North Pacific ocean.
