An orphaned elephant leads a herd of Cape buffalo
In short: In Zimbabwe, a 6,000lb African elephant has abandoned her own species to lead a herd of Cape buffalo. This video explores the profound social bonds and survival instincts that allow such an improbable family dynamic to exist.
Enzo, an African elephant orphaned 25 years ago, was never raised by other elephants. Instead, she integrated into a rare herd of Cape buffalo at the Amira Game Ranch in Zimbabwe. Despite being a different species, she functions as their protector and undisputed leader.
While these bonds demonstrate a deep need for connection in the wild, Enzo's misplaced instincts have created a dangerous environment for the surrounding animals. The situation serves as a natural social experiment on how animals navigate identity and belonging.
