A beautiful aquarium accident is threatening the health of our oceans
In short: The lionfish is a stunning tropical predator that has become a devastating invasive species. This video explores how a few released pets sparked an ecological crisis in the Atlantic and Caribbean.
Originally native to the Indo-Pacific, lionfish were introduced to the Caribbean and Atlantic through the careless release of aquarium fish. Because native species have no evolutionary history with them, the lionfish are aggressive predators that wipe out local populations at an alarming rate.
The documentary highlights how these prolific breeders may pose a greater threat to coral reefs and commercial fish than global warming or pollution. It also examines the difficulty of eradication, noting that lionfish envenomation is one of nature's most painful wounds, and showcases novel approaches being tested in the Florida Keys.
