How a tiny mammal survives by feeding on sea lions and cattle
In short: While most mammals find sustenance in plants or meat, the vampire bat relies entirely on blood. These agile creatures use specialized heat sensors to locate warm veins, allowing them to feed for up to 30 minutes without ever waking their host.
The common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, is a highly specialized carnivore found throughout Mexico, Central America, and South America. Unlike many other bat species, these mammals possess the unique ability to walk, run, and jump on all fours using strong hind legs and a specialized thumb. This mobility allows them to approach prey on the ground and navigate complex environments like caves, mines, and abandoned buildings. They often reside in dark cavities such as tree hollows or abandoned structures. These nocturnal hunters are known to emerge from their shelters while the rest of the world sleeps.
Their feeding mechanism is a marvel of biological adaptation. Using heat sensors located on their noses, they can pinpoint areas where warm blood flows close to the skin. Once they locate a target, they use razor-sharp teeth to make a small incision. To ensure a continuous meal, their saliva contains substances that prevent the victim's blood from clotting. This allows the bat to lap up the blood with its tongue for approximately 30 minutes, often without the host even noticing.
Survival for these bats is a high-stakes endeavor; if they fail to find a blood meal for two consecutive nights, they will die. To mitigate this risk, they have developed complex social behaviors. To practice social generosity, satiated bats frequently vomit blood to assist hungry colony members. This communal support is vital for the colony's stability, especially for nursing mothers, who may receive supplemental feeding from other bats for about two weeks after giving birth. This cooperative behaviour is essential for the survival of the group. Such social bonds help maintain the stability of the colony during difficult times.
