The complex modern reality of managing North America's national mammal
In short: Buffalo are no longer just symbols on a coin; they are living, moving challenges for the American West. From Yellowstone to private ranches, their return requires balancing ecological restoration with the practical demands of livestock management and cultural heritage.
The history of the plains bison (Bison bison) is one of extreme highs and lows. Prior to European colonization, estimates suggest they numbered between 30 million and 60 million animals, making them the widest-ranging large mammals in North America. By 1889, however, westward expansion and deliberate government efforts to subdue Native peoples reduced their numbers to just 512 individuals. While conservationists and Indigenous communities successfully brought the species back from the brink of extinction—reaching approximately 20,000 by 1935—the work is far from finished.
Today, managing these animals involves navigating diverse roles: they are wild animals in national parks like Yellowstone, working livestock on fenced ranches, and meat sources for local economies. This creates a complex logistical landscape where managers must account for drought-strained ranges, annual roundups at sites like Custer State Park, and the movement of herds through open country. Currently, the number of bison held in "conservation herds" is no greater than it was in 1935, highlighting the scale of the remaining task.
Beyond logistics, buffalo restoration is deeply tied to food sovereignty and cultural identity for Native Nations such as the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes. For these communities, bison are not just an "umbrella species" for prairie ecosystems; they are central to traditions that date back thousands of years. Modern efforts by organizations like WWF aim to foster community benefits while ensuring ecological sustainability across the Great Plains.
