The bison is not a buffalo, and the truth is complex
In short: In North America, the word 'buffalo' often evokes images of massive plains-dwelling beasts. However, these iconic animals belong to an entirely different lineage than the true buffaloes of Africa and Asia. Understanding the Bubalina subtribe reveals a deep evolutionary split that dates back millions of years.
The classification of wild cattle is often obscured by common naming conventions. While American bison are frequently called buffalo, they do not belong to the Bubalina subtribe. Instead, Bubalina refers specifically to a group of 'true buffalo' that includes species like the African buffalo, various anoas, and both wild and domestic water buffalo.
The evolutionary history of these animals is rooted in the Late Miocene epoch. Molecular evidence suggests that Bubalina diverged from Bovina—the lineage containing modern bison and cattle—approximately 13.7 million years ago. Within the Bubalina subtribe itself, the Syncerus (African) and Bubalus (Asiatic) lineages split roughly between 8.2 and 9.1 million years ago, a period coinciding with the migration of African ancestors from Asia.
Modern taxonomy remains a subject of active debate. While traditional classifications recognized six species, research by Groves and Grubb in 2011 proposed recognizing four subspecies of the African buffalo as independent species based on the phylogenetic species concept. This approach highlights the extreme morphological variability within these populations, though some biologists argue that more evidence is required before adopting such a radical taxonomic shift.
Today, Bubalina members are found naturally across sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. However, human intervention has expanded their reach significantly; domestic and feral populations have been introduced to Europe, Australia, and the Americas. In some regions, like Australia's Top End, these introduced water buffalo have even undergone partial re-domestication.
