In short: When Uruguay and Argentina met for the inaugural World Cup final in 1930, the rivalry was so fierce that FIFA had to intervene. The teams refused to use the same ball, forcing a compromise: Argentina provided the ball for the first half, and Uruguay provided their own for the second.

The 1930 FIFA World Cup was the first global championship for men's national football teams, held in Uruguay from 13 to 30 July 1930. FIFA selected Uruguay as the host to celebrate the centenary of its first constitution and honor the national team's 1928 Olympic victory. Despite the prestige, the Great Depression made travel difficult, and only four European nations—Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia—made the long, costly sea voyage to compete.

The tournament was unique for having no qualification rounds; every FIFA-affiliated country was invited. Thirteen teams participated, divided into four groups. The Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, a purpose-built 'temple of football' with a 90,000 capacity, hosted the final. Because of heavy rain and construction delays, the stadium was not ready until five days into the tournament, forcing early matches to be played at smaller local venues.

The final was a high-stakes rematch of the 1928 Olympic final. Tensions were palpable; Argentine supporters arrived with the war cry 'victory or death,' and Argentine player Luis Monti reportedly received death threats before the match. Uruguay ultimately triumphed 4–2, securing the inaugural title. While FIFA officially records the United States as third and Yugoslavia as fourth based on a 1986 retrospective ranking, the lack of a third-place match has led to decades of debate and conflicting claims regarding the bronze medal.

The tournament set a high bar for intensity and statistical output, with 70 goals scored across 18 matches. Uruguay’s performance remains statistically notable, maintaining an average goal difference of +3 per match, the highest of any World Cup champion. The event successfully established the World Cup as a premier international competition, effectively moving global football beyond the confines of the Olympic Games.
