In short: The 1950 tournament in Brazil remains unique in football history. It was the only World Cup decided by a round-robin group rather than a single-match final. The host nation needed only a draw to secure the trophy, but a stunning defeat to Uruguay birthed a permanent cultural scar.

Following the cancellation of the 1942 and 1946 tournaments due to World War II, FIFA struggled to find a host nation willing to prioritize sport over post-war reconstruction. Brazil stepped in with a bid at the 1946 FIFA Congress, provided the event occurred in 1950. To justify the massive infrastructure costs—including the construction of the Maracanã stadium—Brazilian organizers insisted on a group-based format to guarantee more matches and ticket revenue.

The tournament featured only thirteen teams due to a series of withdrawals. India, for instance, declined to participate, while Scotland refused to travel because they had finished as runners-up in the British Home Championship. The resulting format placed the four group winners into a final round-robin stage. Brazil entered the deciding match against Uruguay as overwhelming favorites, having scored 23 goals in their previous games. A crowd of nearly 200,000 watched in the Maracanã as Uruguay secured a 2–1 victory.

This defeat, known as the Maracanazo, became a defining moment in Brazilian culture. Goalkeeper Moacyr Barbosa was unfairly blamed for the loss, enduring public scrutiny for the remainder of his life. The tournament also set an attendance record that stood until 1994, with the Maracanã alone accounting for eight of the 22 matches played. While Brazil invested the equivalent of 290 million US-Dollars to showcase itself as a modern nation, the event is remembered primarily for the shock of the final result.
