In short: The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations was a tournament defined by political upheaval and the absence of traditional footballing giants. Amidst this backdrop, Zambia emerged as the unlikely champion, securing their first continental title in a dramatic final that honored a tragic piece of their national sporting history.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, the 28th edition of the tournament, was co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Held between 21 January and 12 February 2012, the event unfolded during a period of significant regional instability. The Arab Spring had brought regime changes to Libya and Tunisia, both of which qualified for the tournament, while Mali dealt with an ongoing insurgency. Notably, several traditional powerhouses, including reigning champions Egypt, Cameroon, Algeria, Nigeria, and South Africa, failed to qualify for the final competition.

The tournament structure featured sixteen teams divided into four groups. Equatorial Guinea and Gabon were automatically seeded as hosts, while the remaining fourteen teams were ranked based on their performances in the three previous editions. The qualification process, which began in July 2010, saw fourteen teams emerge from a complex system of groups. Political interference nearly sidelined Nigeria, as President Goodluck Jonathan briefly banned the team following a poor 2010 World Cup performance, though the government rescinded the order after FIFA threatened sanctions.

The final, held at the newly constructed Stade d'Angondjé in Libreville, pitted Zambia against Ivory Coast. Despite Ivory Coast not conceding a single goal throughout the entire tournament, Zambia secured their first continental title after a tense penalty shootout. Manager Hervé Renard dedicated the emotional victory to the members of the Zambian national team who perished in a 1993 plane crash near the very city where the final was played. This triumph marked a historic moment for Zambian football, capping off a tournament that had been defined by its unpredictable nature and the resilience of its participants.
