In short: Most idol groups dissolve when members pursue solo paths or fulfill military service. 2AM defied this trend, navigating complex multi-agency management and individual contracts to reunite in 2021. Their journey from a reality show spin-off to international ambassadors reveals the endurance of South Korean ballad music.

JYP Entertainment created 2AM via Mnet's Hot Blooded Men, intending them as a ballad-centric contrast to their sibling act, 2PM. The group comprised four members: Jeong Jin-woon, Lim Seul-ong, Lee Chang-min, and Jo Kwon. A unique structural quirk defined their early years: from 2008 to 2014, the group was co-managed by both JYP and Big Hit Entertainment, with Changmin remaining at Big Hit while the other three were under JYP. The group's formation was a direct result of the reality show Hot Blooded Men. Notably, Jinwoon only joined because another trainee withdrew from the company. The band also performed as opening acts for the Wonder Girls during their world tour.

The group achieved significant commercial milestones, including a number one album with I Was Wrong (2010) and multiple top hits on the Gaon Digital Chart. In 2012, they were the initial K-Pop idols to play Tokyo Bunkamura Orchard Hall during a swift Japanese expansion. Their reach was global enough that they were chosen to represent Asia on the Official 2010 Fifa World Cup Album and served as ambassadors for the World Conservation Congress. They secured a major TV music win on February 7 with their track Can't Let You Go Even If I Die. Their Japanese debut single reached the top three of both daily and weekly charts. They also released an original Japanese song in September 2012.

The band's trajectory was marked by significant hurdles, including mandatory military service and individual contract shifts. After a period of hiatus where members moved to different labels, the group officially reunited in 2021 with the EP Ballad 21 F/W. This reunion was made possible by specific contractual clauses allowing them to promote together even after parting ways with their original management agencies. The hiatus was extended as most members completed their mandatory service requirements. Changmin finished his duty in 2008, while the others enlisted between 2015 and 2019. The group recently announced a national concert tour for November 2024.
