In short: Often overshadowed by West Africa's giants, the Niger national football team has proven that persistence pays off. From historic tournament qualifications to stunning upsets against continental powerhouses, the Mena have navigated financial instability and fierce competition to etch their name into African football history.

Representing the Nigerien Football Federation, the national team—nicknamed the Mena after the Dama gazelle—has experienced a rollercoaster of competitive highs and lows. While the squad has struggled with financial constraints that have occasionally forced withdrawals from international play, their competitive spirit remains notable. One of their most significant historical milestones occurred during the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they progressed past Somalia and Togo via the away goals rule, eventually reaching the third round before falling to Algeria.

The early 1990s saw a period of offensive dominance, highlighted by a 7–1 victory over Mauritania in 1990, which remains their largest margin of victory in continental qualifiers. However, the team's most celebrated era arrived in the early 2010s. After a period of near-misses, such as the 2004 qualifiers where they finished just three points shy of the next stage, the squad achieved its first-ever qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations on 8 October 2011. This feat was secured through a superior head-to-head record in a group containing South Africa and Sierra Leone.

The 2012 tournament in Gabon, Tunisia, and Morocco provided a stage for individual brilliance, such as William N'Gounou scoring the nation's first-ever goal at the competition. The team proved they could compete with the best, securing a shock 1–0 victory over Egypt in October 2010. They followed this success by qualifying for a second consecutive tournament in 2013, overcoming Guinea in a two-legged series. Despite facing heavyweights like Ghana and Mali, the Mena have consistently demonstrated that they can challenge the established hierarchy of African football.
