How the 2016–17 Serie A season redefined Italian football history and technological standards
In short: The 2016–17 Serie A season marked a pivotal moment in Italian football, defined by Juventus securing a record-breaking sixth consecutive title. Beyond the pitch, the league became a testing ground for revolutionary video technology, while a historic ownership change at AC Milan signaled a new era for one of Europe's giants.
The 2016–17 campaign represented the 115th season of top-tier Italian football and the 85th organized as a round-robin tournament. Running from 20 August 2016 to 28 May 2017, the season was dominated by Juventus. On 21 May 2017, the club clinched their 33rd overall title and their sixth consecutive championship following a 3–0 victory against Crotone, achieving the feat with one game remaining in the schedule.
Technological innovation also took center stage during this period. On 14 April 2016, the International Football Association Board selected Serie A to trial video assistant refereeing. These tests were conducted privately throughout the 2016–17 season to prepare for a live pilot phase with replay assistance in the following year. FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio championed the initiative, emphasizing that Italy possessed the necessary infrastructure to contribute meaningfully to this experiment in pitch-side technology.
The season was also defined by significant structural and personal shifts. Crotone celebrated their first-ever promotion to the top tier on 29 April 2016, joined by Cagliari and Pescara. Meanwhile, the landscape of Italian club ownership changed dramatically on 13 April 2017 when Silvio Berlusconi sold AC Milan to Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux, led by Li Yonghong. This transaction ended Berlusconi's 31-year tenure, during which the club secured 29 trophies. The season concluded with an emotional milestone on 28 May 2017, as legendary AS Roma footballer Francesco Totti played his final match for the club against Genoa.
