In short: Before 1996, no Danish side had ever broken into the elite tier of European football. Aalborg BK changed that by stepping into a vacuum left by a match-fixing scandal, securing a historic spot and proving they could compete with the continent's heavyweights.

Founded on May 13, 1885, by English railway engineers, AaB initially focused on cricket before adopting football in 1902. The club spent decades establishing itself as a mainstay of Danish football, eventually becoming one of the nation's most historically significant institutions. Their rise to prominence peaked during the 1990s when they secured their first two national championships.

AaB's historic European breakthrough occurred in the 1995–96 season. They were originally eliminated by Dynamo Kyiv in the qualifying rounds, but the Ukrainian side was later expelled due to a match-fixing scandal. This allowed AaB to be reinstated as the first Danish club to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage. In that campaign, they earned a 2–1 home victory over Panathinaikos and a 2–2 draw with Porto before finishing third in their group.

The club's pedigree continued to grow through the 2000s. They became the first Danish side to eliminate an Italian team from European competition by defeating Sampdoria on away goals. In 2008, they reached the Champions League group stage for a second time, facing defending champions Manchester United. While their recent years have been marked by financial challenges and a return to the Danish 1st Division in 2025, AaB remains a cornerstone of Jutland's sporting identity.

The club's home, Aalborg Stadion, has seen significant evolution since its opening in 1920. After a devastating fire in 1960 destroyed the original structure, it was rebuilt as a concrete stadium in 1962. Today, it serves as the stage for 'Den Jyske Klassiker,' one of Denmark's most storied rivalries against AGF.
