In short: On April 11, 2019, voters in Andhra Pradesh participated in a high-stakes legislative assembly election. The result was a landslide victory for the YSR Congress Party, which secured 151 of 175 available seats, fundamentally reshaping the state's political landscape following the 2014 bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The 2019 election marked the second assembly vote since the state's bifurcation. The incumbent Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which had formed the government in 2014 by winning 103 seats in alliance with the Janasena Party (JSP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), faced a significant defeat. By 2019, the previous alliance had dissolved, with each party contesting independently. Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, leader of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led a vigorous campaign, including a 3,648-kilometer padayatra that spanned over 130 constituencies and featured 124 public meetings to challenge the ruling government.

Voter engagement was notably high, with a 79.88% turnout recorded across the state, an increase of 1.92% compared to the 2014 election. Out of over 39 million eligible voters, more than 31 million cast their ballots. Regional participation varied, with Prakasam district seeing the highest turnout at 85.93%, while Visakhapatnam district recorded the lowest at 73.67%. The electoral process was not without controversy; reports of malfunctioning electronic voting machines (EVMs) in nearly 50 locations led to long queues and isolated instances of violence, prompting calls for increased verification of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips.

When results were announced on May 23, 2019, the YSRCP's dominance was clear, sweeping districts such as Kadapa, Kurnool, Nellore, and Vizianagaram. While the TDP managed to secure 23 seats, other major players struggled significantly. The JSP won only one seat, and its leader, Pawan Kalyan, lost in both constituencies he contested. National parties like the Indian National Congress and the BJP failed to win any seats, with many of their candidates losing their security deposits. Despite allegations of malpractice from opposition leaders, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was unanimously voted as the YSRCP legislature leader and invited to form the government by Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan.
