In short: After two terms of rule by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, the 2023 Telangana Legislative Assembly election delivered a decisive victory for the Indian National Congress. This win marks a significant political realignment in southern India, following the party's recent success in Karnataka and ending the incumbency of K. Chandrashekar Rao.

The election, held on 30 November 2023, saw the Indian National Congress (INC) and its ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), secure a majority with 65 seats. This result ended the tenure of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which held 39 seats. The election was a significant blow to the outgoing chief minister, K. Chandrashekar Rao, who lost one of his contested seats.

The political landscape was marked by intense campaigning and scrutiny of government projects. INC leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, calling it the 'ATM of KCR's family' after reports of damage and leakage at the Medigadda Barrage. Additionally, the BRS-led Dharani land records portal faced opposition allegations of facilitating land grabbing, leading the INC to promise a replacement called 'Bhu Bharati'.

The electoral process involved 2,290 candidates, with the highest number of contestants appearing in the L. B. Nagar constituency. Security and integrity were central themes; the Election Commission of India seized ₹659.2 crore in cash and goods suspected of being used for electoral malpractice. The voter turnout included approximately 15.87 million men and 15.84 million women, alongside 2,557 transgender voters.

The election also saw notable political movements, such as the Telangana Jana Samithi and YSR Telangana Party deciding to support the Congress rather than contesting the state elections. The results were officially declared on 3 December 2023, following the vote on 30 November.
