A clean sweep in Tamil Nadu contrasts with the national outcome of India's election
In short: In the 2024 Indian general election, Tamil Nadu delivered a decisive result that stood apart from the national trend. While the incumbent national government secured a third consecutive term, the state’s electorate awarded every single one of its 39 parliamentary seats to a single opposing political alliance.
The 2024 general election in Tamil Nadu, held on 19 April, saw the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) achieve a total victory. Led in the state by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), this coalition captured all 39 available seats in the 18th Lok Sabha. This outcome marked a significant shift from the 2019 election, where the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance had secured 38 seats, leaving the lone seat of Theni to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
The political landscape in the state underwent notable realignments leading up to the vote. In July 2023, the INDIA bloc was formed nationally, with the DMK joining its ranks. Meanwhile, the AIADMK, which had been part of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), officially withdrew from that coalition on 25 September 2023 to pursue a separate path. Additionally, the actor Vijay launched his own political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in February 2024, though he explicitly chose not to contest the general election or support any existing bloc.
Despite the clean sweep by the INDIA alliance in Tamil Nadu, the national picture remained different. The NDA, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, secured a majority across India, allowing Narendra Modi to be sworn in as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term. Voter engagement varied significantly across the state, with the Dharmapuri constituency recording the highest turnout at 81.20%, while the Chennai Central constituency saw the lowest participation at 53.96%.
Following the election, the political dynamics continued to evolve. By May 2026, following the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election results, a new coalition emerged. The Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and the Indian Union Muslim League broke from the DMK alliance to form a government alongside the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. This realignment left the DMK-led alliance with 27 seats, while the new coalition holds 12 seats.
