The undefeated team that was left out of the playoffs
In short: Florida State finished the 2023 regular season with a perfect 13–0 record, capturing the ACC Championship. Yet, despite their dominance, they were excluded from the national title contention. It remains a landmark moment in college football history, highlighting the complex intersection of player health, committee logic, and legal warfare.
The 2023 season was defined by a paradox of dominance and tragedy. Under head coach Mike Norvell, the Seminoles opened with a victory over LSU and maintained an undefeated regular season. However, the trajectory of the team shifted dramatically during a game against North Alabama, where senior quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury. Despite this loss of leadership, the team secured the ACC Championship by defeating Louisville, earning Norvell the Coach of the Year honors and Travis the ACC Offensive and Player of the Year awards.
The exclusion from the College Football Playoff (CFP) sparked a national controversy. Although Florida State finished 13–0, the selection committee ranked Alabama and Texas—both with 12–1 records—ahead of them at the No. 4 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. This move made Florida State the first undefeated Power Five conference team since the 2014 season to be snubbed from title contention. The committee, led by chairman Boo Corrigan, explicitly cited the loss of Travis as the primary reason, arguing the team was fundamentally "different" without him. This decision highlighted the committee's policy of factoring player availability into their evaluations.
The fallout extended beyond the field into the courtroom. Legal proceedings were launched by the board of trustees of the university against the ACC following this omission. The litigation targeted the conference’s Grant of Rights and its $130 million withdrawal fee. The season ultimately concluded with a loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl—the largest loss in bowl history—but the year's legacy remains tied to the debate over how perfection is measured and the legal mechanisms governing collegiate sports.
