In short: Entering 2024 as the defending ACC champions, the Florida State Seminoles faced immense preseason hype. Yet, what followed was a historic descent that saw the team fall from the national elite to a state of bowl ineligibility, marking one of the most dramatic reversals in college football history.

The 2024 Florida State Seminoles season began under a cloud of high expectations. Ranked in the top ten nationally and predicted to win the Atlantic Coast Conference—receiving 81 of 170 first-place votes on July 31—the team appeared poised for dominance. However, the campaign quickly unraveled, resulting in the program's worst seasonal record since 1974.

The collapse was unprecedented. Florida State became the first team in the College Football Playoff era to transition from a double-digit win season to a double-digit loss season. Additionally, they were the inaugural squad to begin a campaign ranked within the top ten and conclude with more than ten losses. This downward spiral included a historic first-ever loss to Duke in their 7th game, breaking a 22-game winning streak in that series.

The consequences were severe. Following a loss to rival Miami, the Seminoles became bowl ineligible, the first defending power conference champion to miss a bowl game since USC in 2018. The team also suffered its worst conference record in program history, finishing 1–7 in ACC play. This decline prompted significant coaching turnover under head coach Mike Norvell, who fired several key assistants, including offensive coordinator Alex Atkins, following a televised blowout against Notre Dame. By the season's end, the roster saw significant movement, with twenty players entering the transfer portal after 2023 and fourteen new players arriving to rebuild the squad.

Despite the team's struggles, individual excellence remained. Punter Alex Mastromanno earned consensus All-American honors, becoming the 46th player in Florida State history to receive the distinction.
