A skyscraper built on a platform above active rail lines in Manhattan
In short: Rising from the West Side of Midtown, 30 Hudson Yards is a feat of engineering that rests on a massive platform over active train tracks. This supertall tower, home to major media and investment firms, also features an observation deck that juts out over the city skyline.
The construction of 30 Hudson Yards required an innovative approach to urban development. To create a foundation for the tower, engineers built a platform over the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's West Side Yard. This structure is supported by caissons drilled deep into Manhattan schist, the solid bedrock beneath the city. This design allowed the building to rise while maintaining a clear path for the Gateway Rail Tunnel project to pass underneath.
The tower, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, stands 1,270 feet tall. Its most striking feature is Edge, an observation deck on the 100th floor that opened in March 2020. As the highest open-air sky deck in the Western Hemisphere, it includes a cantilevered terrace that extends 80 feet from the building. Visitors can look through a glass floor to the street more than 1,100 feet below, or lean against slanted glass walls for a panoramic view of the Hudson River and Manhattan.
Beyond its architecture, the building serves as a significant commercial hub. It houses the headquarters for Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and offices for Warner Bros. Discovery, which occupies a large portion of the tower. The lobby features 11 stainless steel spheres by artist Jaume Plensa, symbolizing global unity. Since its opening, the tower has become a focal point of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, blending high-end office space with immersive public experiences.
The project's financial scale was equally ambitious. In 2019, WarnerMedia sold its office space in a leaseback deal valued at $2.2 billion. The building has also received architectural acclaim, including the Architecture MasterPrize for its landscape design. Whether viewed as a commercial center or a tourist destination, the tower remains a prominent fixture in the New York City skyline.
