In short: For the first time in history, every single top seed failed to reach the Elite Eight. The 2023 NCAA tournament shattered traditional hierarchies, as mid-major programs and lower seeds dismantled the established order to claim a seat at the table.

The 2023 tournament was defined by a historic collapse of the 'blue blood' hierarchy. In a statistical anomaly, every top seed was eliminated before the Elite Eight, with Alabama and Houston falling in the Sweet Sixteen. This resulted in the fewest combined 1- and 2-seeds remaining in the Elite Eight in tournament history, leaving only 2-seed Texas as a survivor from the top tier.

The bracket saw unprecedented 'Cinderella' runs and high-variance upsets. For the second time ever, a 16-seed defeated a 1-seed, as Fairleigh Dickinson upset Purdue. Additionally, 15-seeded Princeton defeated 2-seed Arizona, marking the third consecutive year a 15-seed reached the regional semifinals. These upsets were complemented by the rise of mid-majors: Florida Atlantic, San Diego State, and Miami all reached their first Final Four, while FAU became the first team since 2006 to reach the Final Four in the same year it earned its first tournament win.

The tournament also signaled a shift in the profile of collegiate success. The Final Four featured no former McDonald's All-Americans for the first time since 1979. Just eight rotation athletes within the Final Four appeared in the 247Sports composite recruiting top 100; specifically, San Diego State and Florida Atlantic lacked any top-100 recruits. The UConn Huskies eventually secured the title, defeating San Diego State 76–59 at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Logistically, the 68-team field was populated by 32 automatic bids and 36 at-large selections. The tournament structure included a 'First Four' for the eight lowest-seeded qualifiers, a mechanism designed to narrow the field before the main bracket began.
