In short: In a tournament often defined by chaotic upsets, the 2025 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament was remarkably predictable. From the Sweet 16 through the Elite Eight, higher seeds dominated every single matchup, resulting in a Final Four composed entirely of number one seeds.

The 86th annual edition of the tournament, which ran from March 18 to April 7, 2025, concluded at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. While recent years have been characterized by high levels of volatility, the 2025 field saw some of the fewest upsets in tournament history. Notably, no top-four seeds fell in the opening round, and the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds were won exclusively by the higher-seeded teams.

This dominance by top seeds led to a rare statistical alignment. The Elite Eight featured four number one seeds, three number two seeds, and one number three seed—tying the 2007 tournament for the lowest seed total in that round. Furthermore, all four number one seeds—Florida, Duke, Houston, and Auburn—advanced to the Final Four, a feat previously matched only in 2008.

The tournament also highlighted significant conference shifts. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) set a record with 14 of 16 teams qualifying, while the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) saw a historic low with only four teams earning bids. This marked the first time since the introduction of at-large bids that multiple ACC teams failed to reach the second round, with Duke being the only team from that conference to advance past the first round.

The championship game saw Florida defeat Houston 65–63 to secure its third national title, the first since 2007. The tournament also saw several newcomers, including High Point, UC San Diego, SIU Edwardsville, and Omaha, all making their tournament debuts.
