A 6.9 magnitude earthquake in 2025 revealed a long-dormant fault beneath the Philippines
In short: On September 30, 2025, a powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Visayas archipelago. Centered off the coast of Cebu, the tremor originated from a previously unnamed, underwater fault that had remained silent for over 400 years. The event caused widespread destruction, triggering landslides, power outages, and significant infrastructure damage across the region.
The earthquake, which occurred at 21:59:43 PHT, was the strongest ever recorded in northern Cebu. PHIVOLCS identified the source as the newly named Bogo Bay Fault, an offshore structure that had not shown significant movement for more than four centuries. The quake was shallow, with a depth of 5 km, which intensified the shaking felt across the Visayas, parts of Luzon, and Mindanao. In the immediate aftermath, thousands of aftershocks were recorded, including a Mw 5.8 event on October 13.
The physical impact was severe. The NDRRMC reported 79 deaths and 599 injuries, with over 185,000 houses damaged or destroyed. Critical infrastructure, including bridges, roads, and 19th-century coral stone churches, suffered extensive damage. The earthquake also caused coastal uplift in Barangay Nailon and subsidence in Barangay Hagnaya, while hundreds of sinkholes appeared in Daanbantayan, Medellin, San Remigio, and Bogo. Power grids were disrupted, disconnecting Leyte and Samar from the Cebu-Negros-Panay grid and leaving hundreds of thousands of consumers without electricity.
The Philippine Mobile Belt, a highly deformed zone between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates, makes the region prone to such tectonic events. While Cebu was not historically considered as seismically active as other Philippine regions, this event demonstrated the latent risk posed by hidden faults. The government declared a state of calamity in 53 cities and municipalities, launching massive relief operations with international support from countries including the United States, Malaysia, and Singapore to assist the hundreds of thousands of affected residents.
