In short: The 2026–27 Russian Premier League season is more than just a series of matches. Beyond the 240 scheduled games lies a labyrinth of licensing requirements, promotion playoffs, and strict exclusion protocols that can fundamentally alter the league's composition mid-season.

The 2026–27 season, also known as the Alfa-Bank Russian Premier League, is the 35th since the Soviet Union's dissolution. Spanning from 24 July 2026 to 29 May 2027, the competition features 16 teams competing in a round-robin format. Each club plays 30 matches, facing every opponent twice, once at home and once away. A significant winter break is scheduled between 7 December 2026 and 26 February 2027.

The league's structure relies heavily on the stability of its participants. While the 15th and 16th placed teams face automatic relegation to the First League, the path for promotion is more nuanced. The 13th and 14th placed Premier League teams must defend their positions in home-and-away playoffs against the 4th and 3rd placed teams from the First League. However, these playoffs are contingent on licensing; if First League teams fail to meet 2027–28 RPL licensing standards, the playoff matchups and even the number of available promotion spots can shift.

The league also maintains rigorous disciplinary powers. Clubs can be excluded mid-season for match-fixing, providing inaccurate information, or failing to arrive at matches. The consequences of such an exclusion depend on timing: if a team is removed before playing 15 games, their results are annulled. If they have played 15 or more games, their initial results stand, but remaining matches are awarded as victories to opponents. Regardless of points, any excluded team is automatically relegated to the bottom of the table.
