WWE's new scouting system targets college athletes and independent gyms
In short: Professional wrestling is moving away from its old territory model toward a structured corporate pipeline. By partnering with specific schools, colleges, and independent promotions, WWE is creating a standardized path for talent to enter the spotlight while maintaining control over the training process.
WWE's developmental strategy has undergone significant structural shifts in recent years. For decades, the promotion relied on external territories like Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) or Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) to groom talent. This changed in 2010 with the launch of NXT, an in-house televised brand that became the primary pipeline for the main roster. Before these modern shifts, Deep South Wrestling also served as a training ground. These older methods provided the foundation for how future on-screen performers were groomed.
The current era is defined by two distinct programs: WWE Next in Line (WWE NIL) and WWE Independent Development (WWE ID). Launched on December 2, 2021, WWE NIL specifically targets American college athletes, leveraging NCAA-approved name, image, and likeness policies. Conversely, the WWE ID program, launched on October 29, 2024, supports independent wrestlers by partnering with specific schools such as Reality of Wrestling (run by Booker T) and Nightmare Factory (run by Cody Rhodes). The WWE ID program officially trademarked its name in June 2024 to organize these efforts. Notable trainers like Timothy Thatcher and Sean Waltman were also hired to oversee the development of these athletes.
The system is designed to provide a clear pathway to the promotion while allowing for high-profile cross-pollination. This includes the creation of WWE ID Championships defended on both the independent circuit and in WWE. However, the program's integrity faces real-world risks; following an incident involving Raja Jackson at a KnokX Pro event in August 2025, WWE reportedly severed ties with that specific academy, removing it from their official recruit list. A new Tubi program called WWE Evolve premiered on March 5, 2025, to showcase these prospects. This platform features both Performance Center trainees and those from the independent circuit.
