The wrestling belt that was literally held together by duct tape
In short: In 1998, WWE introduced a title intended as a backhanded comedy prop. It became so popular that it evolved into a serious championship, eventually spawning its own rules—including a '24/7' clause where the title could change hands anywhere, at any time, even while the champion was asleep.
The WWE Hardcore Championship debuted on November 2, 1998. It was originally conceived as a comedy tool to play on Mankind’s reputation for enduring physical punishment. Vince McMahon awarded him the title—a taped-up, broken belt—as a way to keep him away from the main event scene. However, instead of rejecting the insult, Mankind embraced it with gratitude, and the title's popularity eventually forced it into a more serious role, even inspiring rival promotions like WCW to create their own versions.
The championship became famous for its '24/7 rule,' introduced by Crash Holly. This allowed for rapid-fire title changes as long as a referee was present. It led to surreal moments: the belt changing hands while a champion slept, chases through amusement parks, and a 15-minute battle royal at WrestleMania 2000 where the title changed hands 10 times. Even The Undertaker's reign saw this rule in effect, though commentator Jim Ross joked that no one was 'stupid enough' to challenge him under it.
The physical history of the belt is as chaotic as its rules. It was rumored to be a smashed replica of the 'Winged Eagle' WWF Championship held together by duct tape and marker—a theory WWE officially listed as an urban legend but couldn't confirm. Because the original became so damaged from wear and tear, wrestlers like Bradshaw and Tommy Dreamer used customized variations with license plates or bull horns. The title was eventually unified with the Intercontinental Championship on August 26, 2002.
