In short: When the 3rd Armored Division first activated in 1941, it was a heavy, cumbersome force. However, the lessons learned during the Louisiana Maneuvers fundamentally rewrote the blueprint for US armored warfare, shifting the focus from massive armor to flexible, integrated combat teams.

The 3rd Armored Division, nicknamed "Spearhead" or the "Third Herd," began its service during the early stages of World War II. Initially formed on 15 April 1941, its early structure was characterized by a heavy emphasis on armor but a significant lack of infantry and artillery support. This imbalance was exposed during the Louisiana Maneuvers in August and September 1941, which revealed that existing armored divisions were too heavy in armor and lacked the necessary resources to organize effective combat teams.

The failures observed during these maneuvers led to a radical reorganization of the Table of Hydrogen. To simplify command, officials removed the armoured brigade headquarters and cut the count of armoured regiments from three down to two. To improve versatility, the remaining regiments were restructured into one light and two medium tank battalions each. Artillery was also centralized, with three self-propelled 105mm howitzer battalions replacing the previous artillery regiment and field artillery battalion, placing control directly under a division headquarters artillery section.

This new organizational model allowed for the creation of two combat command headquarters, which did not have permanently assigned units. This enabled the division commander to assemble specific combat teams as required by the mission. During the Cold War, the 3rd Armoured Division spent significant time based in West Germany, following its deployment to Europe's theatre in WWII. After participating in the Persian Gulf War, the division ceased operations in Germany on 17 January 1992, eventually undergoing formal inactivation in October 1992 during the post-Cold War military drawdown.
