Why the Aladagh Mountains are named for their striking, multicolored appearance
In short: Situated in Iran's North Khorasan province, the Aladagh Mountains are more than just a geological landmark. Their very name, derived from Khorasani Turkic, reveals a visual secret about their landscape. Understanding this range requires looking at both its linguistic roots and the tectonic forces that shaped its rugged, speckled peaks.
The name Aladagh is a compound word from the Turkic branch of the Altaic language family. Specifically, it originates from Khorasani Turkic, where 'ala' translates to variegated, patchwork, or speckled, and 'dagh' means mountain. Together, they describe a range defined by its multicolored appearance. This linguistic heritage anchors the mountains in the cultural history of the region, providing a descriptive label that has persisted through generations.
Geologically, the Aladagh Mountains are a product of the Alpine orogeny, a major mountain-building event that occurred primarily during the Neogene period. The most significant uplift took place during the Miocene, with orogenic activity continuing into the Pliocene. The range is composed largely of Jurassic rocks, which dominate the western, south-central, eastern, and southeastern sections. A smaller portion of the range, located in the north-central section, consists of older Paleozoic rocks, adding to the geological complexity of the area.
The range is located 25 kilometres south of Bojnurd and merges with the Alborz Mountains in the west, running in a northwest-southeast direction. Its highest point is Mount Shahjahan, which reaches an elevation of 3,032 metres. Unlike the western and northwestern mountains of Iran that benefit from a temperate Mediterranean climate, the Aladagh range is situated far from these influences. Consequently, the mountains experience a distinct climate, contrasting with the generally Mediterranean conditions found in much of the eastern, central, and western parts of the Elburz range.
