In short: Aaron Wan-Bissaka began his career as a winger in the Crystal Palace academy, but a tactical shift under Frank de Boer redefined his path. Known for his exceptional one-on-one tackling, he evolved into a defensive specialist, eventually representing DR Congo on the global stage after a high-profile career in England.

Born in Croydon in 1997, Aaron Wan-Bissaka joined the Crystal Palace academy at age 11. Initially an attacking winger, his trajectory changed during the 2017 pre-season when manager Frank de Boer introduced a wing-back formation. This tactical adjustment highlighted Wan-Bissaka's defensive instincts, leading to a permanent transition to the right-back position. He made his Premier League debut in February 2018 and quickly established himself as a standout, earning the club's Player of the Year award for the 2018–19 season.

In 2019, Wan-Bissaka moved to Manchester United for an initial £45 million, becoming one of the most expensive defenders in history at the time. His defensive prowess, particularly his ability to neutralize opponents in one-on-one duels, earned him high praise, with Jamie Carragher labeling him the best one-on-one full-back in the world in 2020. During his tenure at United, he won the FA Cup and EFL Cup, while consistently ranking among the league's top tacklers.

Wan-Bissaka's international journey was equally complex. Although born in England and having represented the nation at various youth levels, he eventually switched his allegiance to the DR Congo. FIFA approved this change in August 2025, and he made his debut shortly after. By 2026, he was a key figure for the DR Congo, starting at right-back during their World Cup campaign, where they reached the knockout stages before falling to England. His career has also seen challenges, including a 2021 driving ban, but he remains a decorated player, having earned accolades like the 2024–25 Hammer of the Year award at West Ham United.
