Can digital avatars replace the need for a physical pop reunion?
In short: After decades of refusing to step back onto a stage, ABBA has returned—not in person, but as digital 'ABBAtars'. This $175 million virtual residency uses cutting-edge motion capture and Pepper's ghost technology to bring the Swedish icons back to life without the band ever entering a studio again.
The ABBA Voyage residency, held at the purpose-built ABBA Arena in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, represents a massive technological leap for live music. To create the 'ABBAtars', the group collaborated with visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic. The process involved the four band members wearing motion-capture suits while being filmed by approximately 160 cameras. Interestingly, while the digital band uses the group's original vocals, the physical choreography was captured from younger body doubles to ensure the avatars appear as they did in 1979.
The illusion of presence is maintained through a sophisticated blend of digital and practical effects. The 'life-size' band is a projection utilizing a large-scale version of the Pepper's ghost technique, displayed on a 9.5-meter-high, 65-megapixel LED screen. This is synchronized with lighting setups on both the virtual and real sets to enhance the sense of physical presence. A ten-piece live band plays on stage during the show, following membership shifts in November 2025 and April 2024.
Commercially, the project has been a phenomenon. As of September 2023, the show had sold over 1.5 million tickets, generating more than $150 million in sales. With nightly attendance at 99%, the residency brings in upwards of $2 million per week, averaging about £85 ($105) per ticket. While the residency has been extended through February 2027, the venue's permission is set to expire in April 2026 to make way for a housing development on the site.
