In short: In 1999, the Backstreet Boys launched a tour that blended Star Wars themes with futuristic staging. Beyond the catchy hits, the production utilized complex pentagonal stages and wire harnesses to create a 360-degree immersive experience, setting new standards for how pop stars command massive stadium crowds.

The Into the Millennium Tour, supporting the group's third studio album, was a massive undertaking consisting of 123 concerts across 84 cities. The production was noted for its technical ambition, earning the Pollstar Concert Industry Award for Most Creative Stage Production in 1999. The staging featured a central pentagonal platform with a 360-degree design, allowing the band to perform in the round. This setup included adjustable ramps and a platform that could be lowered below the stage level to allow the performers to enter from an 'understage' area.

The spectacle was defined by its cinematic elements. The band made dramatic entrances by riding 'hovering' surfboards via wire harnesses to the sounds of the Star Wars theme, 'The Imperial March'. The performance also utilized various costume changes, ranging from blue checkerboard turtlenecks to molded, galactic armor-like tops introduced during the third leg in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 19, 2000. This level of theatricality helped the tour become one of the fastest-grossing of all time, with the first North American leg alone generating an estimated $30 million from 765,000 tickets.

The tour's scale was evidenced by its massive attendance records. A concert at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta became the most attended concert by a pop artist and the 5th most attended concert in American history. However, the tour was not without logistical and ethical hurdles. Hurricane Floyd forced the postponement of the first two North American dates, originally scheduled for September 14 and 15, to December 5 and 6. Furthermore, disputes in Denver concerning ticket sales forced the band to demand a $75,000 contribution from House of Blues to a Columbine High School scholarship fund as restitution.
