How a former diplomat became the architect of Somaliland's new international standing
In short: Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as Irro, has transformed Somaliland's geopolitical trajectory since his 2024 election. From his roots in the Somali foreign service to his current presidency, he has navigated complex international alliances, including securing historic recognition from Israel and aligning his nation with major global powers.
Born in 1956, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi spent his early career in the Somali Democratic Republic's foreign service, including a tenure as a consular official in Moscow. Following the outbreak of civil war in 1991, he assisted expatriates before eventually relocating to Finland, where he obtained citizenship. His political career in Somaliland began in earnest in 2005 when he was elected to the House of Representatives representing the Justice and Welfare Party. He later served as speaker of the House, establishing himself as a central figure in the region's political landscape.
Abdirahman's presidency, which began on 12 December 2024, has been marked by a significant shift in foreign policy. Under his leadership, Israel became the first nation to officially recognize Somaliland. This diplomatic breakthrough has opened doors to high-level international engagement, including meetings with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Eric Trump at a major economic summit in Davos in early 2026. These interactions have centered on potential investments in infrastructure, specifically the port of Berbera, which is viewed as a strategic hub for trade and energy.
The administration's foreign policy is not without friction. Abdirahman has publicly aligned with United States interests, including support for the 2026 intervention in Venezuela. Domestically, he maintains a firm stance on governance, including the application of capital punishment for serious crimes like murder. While he has faced regional threats from the Somali government and groups such as the Houthis, he continues to pursue wider international recognition, having reached out to leaders in Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia to formalize Somaliland's status on the global stage.
Despite his diplomatic successes, Abdirahman has had to navigate numerous allegations regarding his administration's ties to Israel and the United States. He has consistently denied claims that his government agreed to host foreign military bases or accept Palestinian refugees in exchange for diplomatic recognition. By framing these accusations as attempts to undermine his country's sovereignty, he maintains a focus on his stated goal of securing Somaliland's future through strategic partnerships and economic development.
