In short: Abiy Ahmed rose from a modest upbringing to become Ethiopia's leader, initially winning global acclaim for sweeping reforms and a historic peace deal with Eritrea. Yet, his tenure has been defined by a sharp shift from democratic opening to internal conflict, raising profound questions about the nature of political power.

Born in 1976 in Beshasha, Abiy Ahmed’s early life was marked by military service. He joined the armed struggle against the Mengistu Haile Mariam regime at age 14, later serving in the Ethiopian National Defense Force and as a UN peacekeeper in Rwanda. His ascent through the government began in the intelligence sector, specifically via the Information Network Security Agency, which he helped co-found in 2006. By 2018, following the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegn, Abiy was elected Prime Minister, promising to dismantle the repressive apparatus that had governed Ethiopia for 28 years.

His initial months in office were transformative. He released thousands of political prisoners, unbanned opposition groups, and initiated a landmark peace process with Eritrea, for which he was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. Economically, he sought to move Ethiopia away from state-oriented development by liberalizing key sectors like telecommunications and aviation, and proposing the creation of a national stock exchange to address dwindling foreign-exchange reserves and sovereign debt.

However, the promise of reform faced severe challenges. By 2020, ethnic and political tensions erupted into the two-year Tigray War, involving federal forces and regional militias. This period saw widespread humanitarian crises and a notable democratic backsliding. Critics point to increased media censorship, internet shutdowns, and the arrest of journalists as evidence of a retreat from his early democratic commitments. As of 2023, Abiy has sought to consolidate regional militias into the national army, a move that sparked further conflict in the Amhara region, illustrating the volatile environment in which his administration continues to operate.
