How a small check-delivery service transformed into a global air cargo powerhouse
In short: Starting as a modest operation flying cancelled bank checks, this airline evolved into a critical logistics player. By navigating deregulation and strategic corporate mergers, it became the backbone for major delivery giants. Its history reveals the complex mechanics behind the overnight packages that arrive at your doorstep every day.
Founded in 1970 as Midwest Air Charter, the company initially focused on transporting bank checks to help financial institutions reduce float. By 1978, it had secured a base at Wilmington, Ohio, and gained an all-cargo certificate following the 1977 Air Cargo Deregulation Act. This regulatory shift allowed the firm to expand its reach significantly, eventually catching the attention of the Airborne Freight Corporation, which purchased the airline in 1980 to compete with Federal Express.
The airline underwent a major transformation under its new owners, who rebranded it as Airborne Express and later as ABX Air in 1989 to clarify its identity. Management streamlined the diverse fleet inherited from the early days, focusing on efficiency. A notable innovation was the introduction of C-containers in 1985, which were designed to fit through standard passenger doors, bypassing the need for costly structural modifications to aircraft. This practical approach to logistics helped the company rank among the top ten global all-cargo carriers by the 1990s.
The company's structure shifted again in 2003 when DHL acquired Airborne. Because foreign-owned entities could not operate domestic U.S. carriers, the air operations were spun off as an independent public company, ABX Air. Despite the eventual exit of DHL from the U.S. domestic market in 2008, the airline remained a vital partner, continuing to provide transport capacity for the international network of its primary client. Today, it operates as a subsidiary of the Air Transport Services Group, maintaining its long-standing hub in Ohio.
